DBU Consulting Services

We know our subjects well, since we also develop and train in all these areas and have high performance systems in place with clients. Just as importantly, we can act as a bridge between senior management and developers.

If you have a problem in any of the areas we cover, please email us at info@dbu.co.uk with a brief description and we will get back to you with suggestions as to how we might work with you to resolve it.

SQL Server

With SQL Server, a sound architectural design will save endless waste of resources on performance and functionality issues. We can provide a design and review service that will optimise your data architecture for your needs.

We work in 1-tier, 2-tier and multi-tier architectures. Our particular expertise is in multi-tier architecture with SQL Server and other servers at the backend, .NET DLL's, COM+ or Web Services objects in the middle and .NET, Visual Basic or Access at the front end. The COM+ objects can be our own or other vendors', and we can advise on the use of Transaction Server (MTS) and Queue Server (MSMQ).

We can help you optimise existing SQL servers including Sybase. This work can cover routine maintenance plans as well as table and stored procedure design issues.

Database Conversions

We are often called on to convert older Access databases into Access 2000/XP/2003 or into Access 2000/XP/2003/VB as a front end to SQL Server.

We can be involved in the design or implementation phases. Since we are aware of most of the traps we can help your own team avoid them.

Database Optimisation

When performance becomes an issue, we can help get to the underlying problem whether it be in design, administration or hardware. This may be a server issue or it may the way in which data is manipulated at the front-end; in either event, we have considerable experience and success in helping clients improve performance and reliability.

This can involve existing Access, SQL Server or Sybase databases with different front-ends (.NET, VB, Access, Power Builder or DHTML/XML thin client structures.)

Integration Analysis

A fully integrated project might involve:

  • SQL Server as the main database
  • Access or XML for local storage
  • XML for data interchange and disconnected storage
  • Exchange Server as a data delivery mechanism
  • A custom application in VB or Access or .NET for data manipulation
  • A web application for data manipulation and retrieval

With these diverse skills requirements, many organisations have found our breadth and depth of knowledge an invaluable asset in unifying their own development efforts.

Exchange Server

Conversions from one form of messaging system to another often require specialised knowledge of the target messaging system and a good understanding of networks and the RFC's behind most mother messaging systems.

We have worked in migration planning with systems as diverse as DECmail, OpenMail, cc:Mail, MS Mail and other internal mail systems.
